Maot Chittim
There is an ancient custom to give charity before Pesach to see that all Jews have their holiday needs taken care of. As opposed to Matanot Le’evyonim, which can easily be taken care of on the day of Purim, Maot Chittim are needed well in advance of Pesach to allow for proper distribution of funds.
The money will be distributed privately to local families in need as well as to the following worthy causes:
Jewish Family ServicesFor many people choices must continually be made between paying for food and rent, food and heat, food and medical care. The Kosher Food Pantry was founded in 2002 when it became apparent to us that many of our counseling clients were dealing with food insecurity. We also noted that there was no place for members of our community who keep kosher to go if they needed food assistance. The JFS Kosher Food Pantry provides kosher food items, as well as toiletries and cleaning supplies to people right here in West Hartford experiencing financial difficulties Every year a special effort is made to raise money for the Maot Chitim program, literally meaning “wheat money.” This program is based on the ancient custom of providing funds to help needy Jews purchase Passover food. |
Yad Eliezer However, Yad Eliezer Director Dov Weisel explains, “We don’t give what we don’t have. In past years, thousands of families who turned to us had to go without.” Your donations make the difference to those in Israel who would otherwise go without. Give the gift of freedom. This year, make your Pesach truly worth celebrating by sharing your freedom with the hungry of Israel. |
